SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (June 20, 2015) — Arizona United SC snapped its three-match losing streak with a 2-1 win over the Seattle Sounders 2 in front more than 3,100 fans at Scottsdale Stadium.
Forwards Jonathan Top and Long Tan scored back-to-back goals within five minutes of each other to overcome an early 1-0 deficit.
“I thought it was one of our most complete performances of the year,” said Arizona United SC head coach Michael Dellorusso. “I don’t think it’s perfect yet and where we want to be, but that was the goal tonight. To have the most complete 90 minutes of the year. And I think we did that.”
In the 59th minute, Seattle’s Duncan McCormick was shown a red card bringing the visitors down to 10 men. Moments after the ejection, Arizona United SC’s Danny Garcia played a short corner to Top, who unleashed a shot to the left side of the net. The ball deflected off a Seattle defender and into the back of the net for the equalizer.
Tan gave Arizona United SC the lead for good in the 63rd minute. FC Dallas loanee, Otis Earle, lofted a cross to the back post where Tan was waiting. He won the ball and and headed the cross into the back of the net.
Arizona United SC appeared to draw first blood in the 11th minute when Top beat Seattle goalkeeper Charlie Lyon, but the goal was called off because Top was ruled offside. Less than ten minutes later, it was Seattle who opened the match’s score tally. Defender Nick Miele beat his mark at the far post during a corner kick and headed the ball past Arizona goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski for the 1-0 lead.
For the rest of the half, United controlled possession and Tan found himself with two different point-blank chances on net, but Lyon turned both away to keep it a one-goal match going into the half.
“It’s something we deserved tonight,” said Arizona United SC captain Rob Valentino. “We’ve worked really hard. We’ve been saying that a long time and I’m glad it finally paid off. … I’m just glad we got a win.
