COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 23, 2015) – A five-goal second half performance from the Colorado Springs Switchbacks FC ended Arizona United SC’s two-match USL unbeaten streak on Saturday night.
Playing on a rain-soaked field, Arizona United SC enjoyed a productive first half. However, the club was unable to find the back of the net. Milton Blanco, Chiva, and Jonathan Top all had opportunities, but failed to put the ball on frame. Arizona United SC’s best chance for a goal in the first half was in the 39th minute when Long Tan’s cheeky ball sprung Top free. Top sent in a low cross that Switchbacks’ goalkeeper Devala Gorrick knocked down. Chiva, who ran into the box, collected the ball and was unable to redirect the ball into the net.
The Switchbacks broke the scoreless match in the 49th on Luke Vercollone’s first goal of the evening. Forward Aaron King took a touch to the inside and split the Arizona United SC backline with a through ball to Vercollone, who then hammered a low shot into the back of the net.
In the 75th minute, Saeed Robinson doubled the Switchbacks’ lead when he, unmarked in the box, volleyed a shot that took a deflection on its way into the net.
Ten minutes later, the Switchbacks added three goals in four minutes. In the 85th minute, Miguel Gonzalez collected a ball on the edge of the box and sent a piercing shot into the far post. Two minutes later, Martin Maybin added the fourth goal when he beat Arizona United SC defender Tyler Ruthven and curled his shot past a diving Carl Woszczynski.
Vercollone recorded a brace with the Switchbacks’ final goal in the 89th minute when he headed home Gonzalez’s cross.
Up next for Arizona United SC is a road match against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 on Sunday, May 31.
