VANCOUVER, BC (May 31, 2015) – Arizona United Soccer Club suffered a 2-0 defeat to the Vancouver Whitecaps FC 2 on Sunday afternoon at Thunderbird Stadium.

After a back and forth first half that saw both sides squander opportunities to score the opening goal, it was the Whitecaps who were the first to find the back of the net in the second half. On a third consecutive corner, the ball was cleared out to the top of the box. There waited Whitecaps midfielder Kianz Froese, who chested the ball down and fired a shot through traffic.

Arizona United SC goalkeeper Carl Woszczynski appeared to have lost the ball as it traveled towards the net, but he was able to make a diving save at the last second on the line. Unfortunately for Woszczynski, the ball was not cleared far enough and an opportunistic Whitecaps forward Caleb Clarke put home the rebound for the opening goal.

The Whitecaps doubled its lead and put the match out of reach for Arizona United SC in the 78th minute when Brett Levis dribbled through two Arizona United SC defenders and finished into the far post.

Arizona United SC had its chances in the match, but couldn’t capitalize.  Arizona United SC came out and played conservatively for the first 25 minutes with team defending and counter-attacks. Arizona had its first chance in the 28th minute when Brad Stisser’s cross from the right wing, intended for an unmarked Robbie Derschang, was headed out by the Whitecaps.

In the 33rd minute, Derschang rounded a Whitecaps defender on the line and charged into the box. He rifled a low cross that crossed across the face of goal before Jonathan Top could tap home an easy goal.

In the second half, Long Tan had an opportunity in the 53rd minute that he sliced just wide. Top had another chance in the 54th minute, but redirected his header over the crossbar. The Whitecaps defense buckled down as the match progressed in the second half and thwarted any good opportunities for Arizona who close out May with back-to-back losses.
