SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (August 3, 2015) — Today Arizona United SC announced that midfielder Jonathan Top has been selected to play for the Guatemala U23 National Team during its Olympic qualifiers in August. The National Federation of Guatemala made the selection and contacted the club about its decision.
“Arizona United is very happy for the opportunity Jonathan has earned,” said Arizona United Head Coach Michael Dellorusso. “It is a great honor for any player to be called in to represent their country. We wish Jonathan all the best in the upcoming Olympic qualifying tournament.”
Top will report to Guatemala City on August 4 to train and play with the team as it prepares for Olympic qualifying. The qualifiers will take place on August 11, 13 and 15. Guatemala will play Honduras on August 13 and kick off against Belize on August 15. The winner of the three-nation group will move on to the 2015 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Championship in October. Those matches will be played in the United States.
If Guatemala finishes second in the group, the country would play in a two-legged playoff with the second-place nation in Group A for a spot in the 2015 CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Championship. Those legs take place on August 19 and August 23.
Top will return to Arizona once Guatemala has finished playing its qualifiers in August.
“The whole organization is very excited for Jonathan,” said Arizona United SC owner Kyle Eng. “Arizona continues to be a place where great soccer players can grow and develop. And we’re proud to have national team-caliber players developing in our backyard and providing a great example to our local youth players of the importance of hard work and dedication to soccer.”
